เมื่อวันที่ ๑๘ กันยายน ๒๕๕๗ นายกฤต ไกรจิตติ เอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงกัวลาลัมเปอร์ ได้ร่วมเป็นสักขีพยานในพิธีลงนามบันทึกความเข้าใจระหว่างนางสมใจ สุวรรณศุพนา นายกเทศมนตรีเมืองภูเก็ตในฐานะผู้แทนเทศบาลเมืองภูเก็ต กับดาโต๊ะปาตาฮิยาฮ์ บินติ อิสมาเอล ประธานสภาเทศบาลเกาะปีนัง เพื่อสถาปนาความสัมพันธ์เมืองคู่มิตรระหว่างเมืองภูเก็ตกับเกาะปีนัง  โดยมีนายไมตรี อินทุสุต ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดภูเก็ต นายลิม กวน เอ็ง มุขมนตรีรัฐปีนัง และนางศรีรัตน์ วาทีสาธกกิจ กงสุลใหญ่ ณ เมืองปีนัง ร่วมเป็นสักขีพยานด้วย บันทึกความเข้าใจดังกล่าวได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากความสัมพันธ์ทางประวัติศาสตร์ การเมือง วัฒนธรรม และความผูกพันระหว่างชุมชนทั้งสองมากกว่า 100 ปี และได้กำหนดกรอบความร่วมมือและการแลกเปลี่ยนในด้านต่าง ๆ อาทิ การบริหารจัดการเมือง การค้า การลงทุน การศึกษา การอนุรักษ์มรดกวัฒนธรรม และการติดต่อระหว่างประชาชน และด้านอื่น ๆ ที่เป็นผลประโยชน์ร่วมกัน ทั้งนี้ ภายหลังการลงนาม ได้มีการจัดการสัมมนาประวัติศาสตร์เกี่ยวกับความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างภูเก็ตกับปีนังและการสัมมนาของภาคเอกชน และในช่วงค่ำเอกอัครราชทูตและนายกเทศมนตรีเมืองภูเก็ตได้เป็นเจ้าภาพเลี้ยงอาหารค่ำแก่คณะผู้เข้าร่วมพิธีด้วย

 

On 18 September 2014, H.E. Mr. Krit Kraichitti, Ambassador of Thailand to Malaysia, witnessed the signing of an MOU between Mrs. Somjai Suwansupana, Mayor of Phuket City Municipality, and Dato' Patahiyah binti Ismail, President of the Penang Island Municipal Council, to establish Phuket City and Penang Island as Friendship Cities. The signig ceremony was also witnessed by H.E. Mr. Maitri Intusut, Governor of Phuket Province, H.E. Mr. Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang, Mrs. Srirat Vathesatogkit, Royal Thai Consul-General in Penang, and Mr. Chow Kon Yeow, Penang EXCO member for Local Government, as well as over 100 other guests. The MOU, which was inspired by the over a century of cordial relations between the two cities in all aspects, set out the framework for cooperation in various areas ranging from city management, trade and investment, to education, culture and people-to-people contact. Besides the MOU signing, a history symposium on Phuket-Penang relations and a business networking seminar were also organized to commemorate this auspicious occasion. A dinner was also hosted by H.E. the Ambassador and the Mayor of Phuket in honour of the participants.
