On 29 October 2024, H.E. Ms. Lada Phumas, Ambassador of Thailand to Malaysia, was invited to the United Nations (UN) Day 2024, organised by the UN Multi-Country Office for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, under the theme “Our Common Future” at Taman Tugu Park, Kuala Lumpur. The event was officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Ahmad RozianAbd. Ghani, Deputy Secretary-General (Bilateral) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, with welcoming remarks by Ms. Karima El Korri, UN Resident Coordinator. The event was well attended by over 300 participants, including diplomatic corps in Malaysia, government representatives, private sector, civil society, partner organisations, as well as media.
In his officiating speech, the Deputy Secretary-General underlined the importance of unity and shared responsibility of global community in addressing present challenges and creating a more resilient and sustainable world for future generations. He also reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to the UN and its missions, including the peacekeeping operations and the restoration of international peace and security, as well as the fostering of partnership among nations in accordance with the Malaysia Madani.
As for Thailand, H.E. Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, delivered a UN Day Speech on 24 October 2024 in Bangkok, reaffirming the commitment of Thailand, as a regional hub for more than 40 UN agencies, including UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), to constructive cooperation with the UN through 3 principle pillars, namely (1) fostering peace and security, (2) championing sustainable development through sharing of the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP) to advance the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs), and (3) promoting human rights as Thailand is assuming the membership of the UN Human Rights Council for the term 2025 – 2027.
On this occasion, the Ambassador also met the Deputy Secretary-General and Ms. Karina, and had the opportunity to share information on Thailand’s proactive role in collaborating with the UN ESCAP to host the 8th High-Level Brainstorming Dialogue on Enhancing Complementarities between the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (HLBD) on 31 October 2024 in Bangkok.
The United Nations Day 2024’s activities included briefing and discussions as well as presentations on various missions of the UN, booths set up by UN partners’ and civil societies, as well as Taman Tugu trail walk. UN Day, celebrated every year on 24 October, commemorates the entry into force of the UN Charter, leading to the establishment of the UN in 1945. The year 2024 marks 79th anniversary of the establishment of the UN.
