Legalization of Malaysian or Foreign Documents for Use in Thailand

Official documents issued by Malaysian authorities or by foreign embassies/consulates in Malaysia that are intended for use in Thailand must undergo the following procedures:

Procedure

  1. If the document is in a foreign language, such as Malay, Chinese, or Arabic, it must first be translated into English.

  2. Submit the original document or a certified copy, together with the original English translation certified for accuracy, to obtain authentication from:
    • The relevant embassy or consulate in Malaysia, and
    • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia (Wisma Putra).

  3. Submit the documents for legalization at the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

  4. Obtain further legalization from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.

1) In Case of Submitting the Documents in Person

Required Documents

  1. Application form for document legalization (download the form).
  2. A copy of the applicant’s national ID card or passport, signed to certify it as a true copy.
  3. The original document or certified copy, together with a photocopy (1 set)
  4. The original English translation certified as accurate, together with a photocopy (1 set)
  5. Fee: RM 60 per document (cash payment only).

2)  In Case of Submission by an Authorized Representative

Required Documents

  1. Application form for document legalization (download the form).
  2. Form of Authorization Letter (download the form).
  3. A copy of the document authorizer’s national ID card or passport, signed to certify it as a true copy (1 set)
  4. A copy of the ID card or passport of the authorized representative, signed to certify it as a true copy (1 set)
  5. The original document or certified copy, together with its photocopy (1 set)
  6. The original English translation certified as accurate, together with its photocopy (1 set)
  7. Fee: RM 60 per document (cash payment only).

Note:

If the person granting the authorization is a foreigner, the Authorization Letter and the copy of the national ID card or passport must first be certified by a notary public and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia (Wisma Putra) before submitting them to the Thai Embassy for legalization.

Processing Time

  • Legalization requests for documents or requests for Power of Attorney or a Consent Letter take approximately 2 working days.

    Collection of the documents will be available on the next working day from 14:30 to 16:30 hrs.
    Express service and morning collection are unavailable at present.

  • Requests for various certification letters take approximately 3–4 working days, depending on the case.

Operating Hours

Legalization and Documentary Services is open Monday to Friday, from 09.30 to 12.30 hrs. and from 14.30 to 16.30 hrs. 

Collection is only available on the next working day from 14.30 to 16.30 hrs. (Please note our Official Holidays).
