On 22 September 2026, H.E. Ms. Lada Phumas, Ambassador of Thailand to Malaysia, was invited to attend a lunch reception hosted by the Ministry of Communications of Malaysia at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur, to promote Malaysia’s candidature for re-election to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the term 2027 - 2030. The event was attended by more than 100 participants, including Tan Sri Amran Mohamed Zin, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia; Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah, Secretary General of the Ministry of Communications of Malaysia; ambassadors and representatives of foreign diplomatic missions accredited to Malaysia; and representatives of relevant Malaysian agencies.

Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister of Communications of Malaysia, presided over the event and delivered a keynote address outlining Malaysia’s vision for its role in the ITU under the theme “Inclusivity for an Equitable Future.” He highlighted three key priorities: (1) Connected, (2) Inclusive, and (3) Safe.

On this occasion, the Ambassador met with the Minister of Communications of Malaysia and reaffirmed Thailand’s readiness to deepen bilateral cooperation in telecommunications, including by strengthening engagement with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), under the leadership of Tan Sri Mohamad Salim bin Fateh Lim, for the mutual benefit of both countries. Their exchange built upon the outcomes of the meeting between Mr. Chaichanok Chidchob, Minister of Digital Economy and Society of Thailand, and the Malaysian Minister of Communications on 9 September 2026. The meeting took place during the Thai Minister’s visit to Kuala Lumpur from 8 to 9 September 2026 to attend the Ministerial and Regulatory Roundtable Meeting (MRRM), held in conjunction with M360 ASEAN 2026. Throughout the visit, the Ambassador facilitated the Minister’s programme and provided the necessary coordination and support.
