On 18 July 2023, H.E. Ms. Lada Phumas, Ambassador of Thailand to Malaysia gave an interview for EGAT Ebiznews magazine (July-September 2023 publication) at the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
H.E. Ambassador Lada commended the close ties between Thailand and Malaysia. Both sides established diplomatic relations on
31 August 1957, which also marks Malaysia’s National Day (Hari Merdeka). The 31st of August this year will therefore be the 66th year of
their diplomatic relations. H.E. Ambassador Lada also emphasized the comprehensive bilateral relations between the two countries including
long-established energy cooperation, for example, the founding of the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Authority (MTJA) in 1991 to resolve the area of overlapping continental shelf in Thailand and Malaysia’s Joint Development Area (JDA) in the Gulf of Thailand. In addition, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) recently signed 3 MOUs with Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), Planet Utility and B. Grimm during Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia’s official visit to Thailand during 9-10 February 2023. The MOU between TNB and EGAT entails
a joint feasibility study to enhance interconnection between Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand in support of the ASEAN Power Grid initiative.
